THE PROJECTS

CUBA  (LIMIT 10)   Our goal is to photograph the rhythm of life of Havana, a city in which music flows from every block,  we will immerse ourselves in the neighborhoods. from Old Havana to Playa and in between,  and have the opportunity to both photograph and learn from some of the world’s best musician.   For this project we have reserved a luxury villa near Independence Plaza that will serve as our central location.  We have four bedrooms in this location which has an expansive garden with tropical birds and flowers.   Better yet it is the home of the wife of Cuba’s most famous composer, Compay Segundo, who wrote the song Chan Chan in 1984.  The song was featured in the album Buena Vista Social Club and became an international hit.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chan_Chan_(song)      We will have group breakfasts here, slideshows, and presentations and the use both private transport and communal taxis to move around the city.   Local students will assist you in finding themes to photograph.  This is a fantastic opportunity to travel to  a city where photography can still be practiced in the streets,  meet new people, and enjoy the rhythm and sounds of Cuba.    I will share with you what I have learned about photography and all of the techniques and tips that result in original images and a great photographic experience.   A typical day would be a group breakfast, slideshow presentation, presentation on Cuba by local sociologist Abelson Valerio, and then venture off for an afternoon of photography, a group trip to the Malecon at night, and then visit to a night club.   We will keep you occupied!

WHAT IS INCLUDED:   Welcoming meal, all breakfasts, two group lunches, snacks and food daily, open bar, and closing slideshow and party.   Daily viewing sessions, portfolio reviews and mini-workshops

WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED:  Airfares, visa, airport transfers (but we can arrange for you)

WHERE DO I STAY?  We have four bedrooms at the villa and more available at a mansion in the area.  We can alternately help you find other accommodations and transportation to our villa, but for the maximum experience stay with the group.

THE BACKSTORY

The goal of sound and vision workshops is photography as a way to understand music, and to use music as a way to understand life.  This can be as simple as the rhythm of everyday life,  or as complex as interpreting a song with a photograph.   In cities like New Orleans and Havana life and music has intertwined for generations,  to the that both cities would be unrecognizable without the other.    New Orleans and Cuba were both the sad destinations of slaves from Africa by way of Haiti, who brought with them the gods of the Yoruban pantheon and the rhythms of traditional African culture.  In Cuba these rhythms combined with the Spanish (itself a blend of African and Castillian) into Afro-Cuban music.  Our goal is to explore the idea of music with our cameras and to help you to develop a unique vision, or carry along mine!
